Environment and Water Minister Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man today said in a statement that his ministry had obtained the mandate from the 76th meeting of the National Local Government Council to impose the levy on Pollution.

He said that an agreement to continue the implementation of the campaign was reached during the meeting of environment ministers and members of the Executive Council of the State responsible for the environment (Mexcoe), that he chaired today.

“Several other states plan to begin implementing this campaign alongside collection of the levy, beginning with the initial consumer education phase.

“This initiative implemented since 2021 is an effective effort to reduce plastic pollution in Malaysia. I hope this initiative will continue to be supported by all parties in the interest of environmental sustainability, which is our shared responsibility,” he said in a statement today.

Apart from this, he said that the Department of Environment (DOE) has continued to strengthen the Rakan Alam Sekitar (RAS) program by creating five core groups under RAS 2.0 to mobilize conservation activities of the environment across the country in a more targeted way.

According to him, the creation of the agency RAS cluster, the campus RAS cluster, the school RAS cluster, the industrial RAS cluster and the community RAS cluster aims to train and categorize the RAS members, and will involve members of the Civil Defense Force, People’s Volunteer Corps, Scouts and Rukun Tetangga.

Tuan Ibrahim said the meeting also agreed to strengthen cooperation between the federal government and the state government to ensure that development activities can be balanced with the need to preserve the environment.

The meeting also informed that the celebration of the National Environment Day at the national level will be held this year on October 21 in Pahang.

Meanwhile, Tuan Ibrahim said the Mexcoe will be strengthened with the reorganization of its membership as well as the addition of new members, especially from the state governments of Sabah and Sarawak. — Bernama
