Aldi baked beans: why are UK supermarkets banning plastic wrap?
Budget supermarket chain Aldi has announced that it is removing shrink wrap from its Corale baked bean multi-packs in a bid to reduce plastic waste.
The ban will impact all of its stores in the UK as it will change the way it sells one of its most popular products.
The move is expected to save 78 tonnes of single-use plastic from landfill each year, but will still offer shoppers a multi-pack discount when buying four boxes, reports the Manchester Evening News.
The supermarket will also test removing the outer plastic wrap from its sweet corn mini packs in a number of stores this summer.
Why does Aldi ban plastic on its multi-pack beans?
These changes are Aldi’s latest attempts to reduce and remove unnecessary plastic from its products.
The supermarket has pledged to halve the volume of plastic packaging it uses by 2025, which will see it remove 74,000 tonnes of plastic from circulation.
Richard Gorman, Director of Plastics and Packaging at Aldi, said: “Removing unnecessary plastic from our bean multi-pack is another step in our commitment to reducing plastic in our ranges.
“We know it’s becoming increasingly important to our customers that their everyday products are environmentally friendly, and we’re delighted that this decision is helping them shop more sustainably.”
What other food product will Aldi remove plastic from?
Britain’s fifth-largest supermarket will also trial the removal of the outer plastic packaging from its sweetcorn mini packs in a number of stores this summer.
If successful, it will remove an additional 24 tonnes of plastic from circulation per year.
It also means Aldi customers will be able to buy more of their everyday items plastic-free.
The changes are the latest in the supermarket’s efforts to reduce and eliminate unnecessary plastic from its products.
Aldi is one of many brands and retailers in the UK Plastics Pact to reduce plastic waste and boost recycling.
On its website, the supermarket said its buying and plastics and packaging teams have worked together to review their entire product range, taking positive steps to reduce the amount of plastic and packaging.
Since April 2021, Aldi has been testing product refills, as well as reusable product bags made from recycled bottles in all of its stores.
Which Aldi food products have already had their packaging changed?
Aldi’s fresh meat range has moved from ready-to-use cardboard packaging to reusable crates, saving 5,800 tonnes of packaging a year.
In January 2021, the supermarket replaced all plastic in its soft drink cans with 100% recyclable cardboard and, by the end of the year, pledged to remove single-use plastic from its own pouches of tea – by switching to biodegradable tea bags and removing the exterior. Plastic wrap.
Its range of fresh steaks will switch to cardboard trays and it removes plastic lids from the brand’s own baby wipes, saving 535 tonnes of plastic a year.
The budget supermarket also removed the lids from its own creme fraiche, Big Pot yoghurts and ready-to-drink coffee, resulting in a reduction of 208 tonnes of plastic.
